Flies and rats feed on variety of food. It could happen in an industrial premise.

Flies and rats are two common pests invading in an industrial premise. The kitchen in the cafeteria is where the food source are made available to these nuisance pests. Both have adapted well to feeding on garbage, so it is abundant almost anywhere where people work or live. Flies night resting places are usually near to their daytime food sources. It is important to keep these sources of out of reach from flies and rodents after our consumption or food preparation.

Do you know both flies and rats are reproductive pests? A fruit fly life cycle competes in 8 to 10 days. An adult house fly typically lives 15 to 25 days. On an average, rats reproduce 3 to 8 times a year, and each time generating on average 4 to 10 young per litter. They have short gestation period of 3 weeks, and for instance, Norway rat takes around 10 to 12 weeks to mature. We might be facing more rat supply risks without effective rat control in place. In fact, a pair of rodents can produce as many as 2,000 descendants in a year if left untreated.

How does flies and rats invade the buildings? Flies are attracted to buildings via odor and air current, or warm and moist material with sufficient food for larval development (for egg laying purposes). The other common species, Fruit fly also known as Drosophila species, are attracted to fresh fruits and vegetables and animal excrement. Attracted to light, they source for alternative sites such as soil mop and broom heads, fruit placed under table or cabinet, or left out in a bowl or dish water or mop water full of food particles provides ideal breeding sites. Rats are considered agile pests and 1 cm is all rodent needs to sneak into a building. Because they are good climber and swimmers or jumper, any possible proofs of entries in a building or landscape makes it really easy for rats to enter your premise.

What are the health risks files and rats caused to humans and property? Flies and rats are attracted to wide variety of substances from excrement to human food. Flies is known to harbor more than 100 different pathogenic organisms. Some examples of disease pathogen include Salmonellosis, polio, dysentery, typhoid fever and cholera. Rodents places human at risks of contracting diseases such as Salmonellosis, Weil’s disease and Plague. These diseases can cause food poisoning symptoms such as fever, headaches, diarrhoea and nausea. Rats can do damage to the buildings and interior wiring through their bites, leading to repair costs and potential fire risks, economic loss such as contamination to commodities, stock rejection
