Little Woven Treasures from Indonesia

You may not know this about Bali-based brand Jewel Rocks: Its accessories are hand-woven by skilled women from nearby towns and villages and it’s a brand that aims to bring empowerment to women through employment of their services. As new limited-edition creations by Jewel Rocks arrive at shopthemag.com, we sit with Jewel Rocks founder, Imelda Widjaja, for a chat about what makes Jewel Rocks pieces so special.

What inspired the jewellery brand, Jewel Rocks?

Our main inspiration comes from trinkets and treasure hunts mixed with stories of travels and cultures around the world - whether it's ethnic culture, beach culture, rock music or hobo-indie culture. We're also obsessed with friendship bracelets and cultural identity jewellery and charms. Girls and women definitely inspire us, and we thought of these unique individuals among our families, friends and colleagues while making these accessories.

How has the beauty and culture of Bali, Indonesia, influenced Jewel Rocks’ creations?

Being in Bali often puts me in a “zen” mode, and I feel more at ease because we're closer to nature. I feel less boxed in and have fewer constraints when it comes to imagining. Freedom is essential for creativity. Bali is a melting pot of people and cultures. I meet friends and clients from all over and sharing ideas and experiences with them really influences the way we work and create.

What makes each Jewel Rocks piece special?

They're really personal and delicate, made with precision and detail, and they’re cool, funky and pretty. The colour mix is special, nothing you will find in other jewellery brands. They say something about you, about what you love, and they steal your heart the moment you see them.
