SMRT will double its Prius Hybrid taxi fleet to 1,300 next year
SMRT Corporation Ltd. (SMRT) has been the largest Prius Hybrid fleet owner in Singapore since the introduction of 600 taxis in October 2013. The next batch of 400 taxis will enter service by the end of September 2014, marking a significant milestone of 1,000 Prius Hybrid taxis. SMRT will then add another 300 taxis to its fleet, bringing the total number to 1,300 Prius Hybrid taxis by end March 2015. This, together with SMRT’s existing 99 eco-friendly Hyundai Azeras, will account for more than a third of SMRT’s entire taxi fleet of 3,800.
Mr. Benny Lim, Managing Director of SMRT Roads said, “Being able to bring in another 700 taxis to our Prius Hybrid fleet means a lot to us. It will now make up more than a third of eco-friendly taxis in our entire fleet. These technologically advanced taxis will offer our passengers quieter and smoother rides while guaranteeing a cleaner and greener ride.”
Mr. Vincent Yap, 54, who has been driving the Prius taxi since October 2013, has been very pleased with his vehicle. “I switched to the Prius Hybrid taxi because I was attracted to its environmentally-friendly features. Most of my passengers have given feedback that their rides were smoother and quieter. Opting for the Prius has helped me save on fuel costs and, at the same time, make a responsible contribution to travelling on Singapore roads.”
Apart from expanding its eco-friendly taxi fleet to provide a better travel experience for its commuters, SMRT has also sealed a partnership with ExxonMobil, extending greater petrol savings to its taxi partners. This collaboration will allow partners to enjoy a discount when they top up their petrol, with the use of the Esso Smiles Card. Taxi partners will also stand to enjoy an additional S$1 discount off every S$20 of petrol purchase, during the promotion period.
The Prius hybrid vehicle is known for its fuel efficiency, low carbon emission as well as safety and comfort features which provide passengers with more comfortable, smoother and quieter rides.
· Fuel Efficiency: The Prius is the most fuel efficient taxi on the roads today. The vehicle is able to travel 25km per litre of petrol or up to 1,125km per tank, far more than any petrol or diesel taxi currently available.
· Carbon Emission:
o Emits the least amount of CO2 at 92g/km, which is the lowest as compared to a petrol or diesel engine.
o If a Prius vehicle travels 250km/day, it would have saved between 1,800kg to over 6,000kg of CO2 per vehicle per year over a Euro V Diesel taxi.
· Safety and Comfort: Seven SRS airbags to provide 360 degree protection for driver and passengers.
