Children bear the brunt of the impact in Jakarta floods

As of tonight, thousands of children in Jakarta will not be sleeping in their beds at home. Instead, they will spend the night in a shared space of school or other government buildings, after they were forced from their inundated homes.

It’s three weeks since typhoon Bopha, locally known as Pablo, made landfall on the eastern coast of Mindanao, Philippines; and the sound of hammering could be heard echoing throughout the community we went to for shelter assessment.

Disaster responders work through the holidays to help children and families

When you’re a disaster responder you get hardened to the numbers. The millions affected. The roofs blown away. The roads broken. The schools closed. The food and water needed. You have to be hardened and focus on what has to be done. But sometimes something takes you by surprise and reminds you of the human story.

Typhoon Bopha leaves a trail of destruction

On the night when the Typhoon hit, my house was crushed by a tree. Now I live in my father’s one bedroom house with seven other families. I am a day care worker but the day care centre was destroyed. Now there is nowhere for the small children to go. My two children live across the river and they are so scared that the storm might come back.

Typhoon Bopha: They were unprepared for storms like this

Two years ago, no one would have expected a situation like this. Families here are not prepared for such disasters, simply because no one expects it to hit them. As a result, their houses were not built to resist such strong winds, fishermen were unlikely to pay any attention storm alerts, and children have not taught to react and respond to a situation like this.

Thousands of children caught up and cut off from help in the aftermath of Typhoon Bopha

While the residents of Mindanao were still fast asleep this morning, Typhoon Bopha approached the southeastern coastline of the Philippines, packing 210km/h of wind and heavy rain. The winds and rain were so strong that it was unlike anything I had ever seen before.

Philippines Floods: What do you want to be when you grow up?

During my field visit in Laguna province, the first kid I got a chance to talk to was an 11-year-old girl named Jean. Sometimes, the simplest question brings out the most interesting answer—especially when this answer is not expected from the innocent mind of a child.

Protecting the flood-affected children in the Philippines

My focus was on the approximately 400 children inside that afternoon. In my conversations with them, there were no overt signs of psychosocial distress, indicative of their resiliency. But there were definitely some signs of mounting distress, such as shouting and dealing with things in an overly aggressive manner.

Filipino children should not be made to live in such conditions

Whenever I read reports of a flood, I imagine a powerful river, swift-moving and ice-cold. The Colorado River transplanted to an unsuspecting town. The flooding in Manila, the Philippines is nothing like that. About 2.7 million people are now estimated by local authorities to be affected, with 440,000 in just 940 evacuation centers.

They left their homes with almost nothing

It has been raining for almost a month now here in Manila, Philippines. This is the first time I have experienced so much rain – a big change from my previous post in Mindanao. Waking up to howling winds and torrential rain has been scary for me – I can only imagine how frightening this must be for the young and vulnerable children living in the region.

The fight goes on to free the schools in Cagayan De Oro

Nearly six months after the devastating flash floods hit Cagayan de Oro, the challenge to find a permanent shelter for those who lost their homes remains a struggle. When I arrived on May 28th, about 280 families were estimated to be camping out in five schools across the city, as their neighbourhoods had been flattened in floods and deemed ‘unsafe to build’ on by the local authorities.

Progress towards achieving Millennium Development Goals remains a challenge for Pakistan. MDG 4 requires a two third reduction in child mortality, whereas, MDG 5 demands a reduction of maternal mortality ratio by three quarters. There is a need to accelerate the efforts to achieve the desired results by 2015.

The children in Hong Ca commune, Vietnam, know that practising rescue drills can save lives in the event of a real natural disaster. Given that they take what they’ve learned at school home to share with their parents and siblings, they can be important communicators on how to reduce the risk of an emergency within their families and communities.
