Longines Singapore Gold Cup 2011

Press Releases   •   Nov 10, 2011 14:51 SGT

- President Tony Tan Keng Yam to also present donation cheques totalling $1.5 million to 23 selected beneficiaries

The second-running of the Longines Singapore Gold Cup will take place on Sunday, 13 November 2011 and it will be graced by President Tony Tan Keng Yam.

As a tradition, Singapore Gold Cup is also designated as the Club’s Annual Charity Race Day. President Tony Tan Keng Yam will, on behalf of the Club and the Tote Board, present cheques totalling $1.5 million to 23 charitable organisations. Longines Ambassador of Elegance, Aaron Kwok will also be making a special guest appearance at the event.

Said Mr Yu Pang Fey, President and Chief Executive of the Singapore Turf Club, "We are delighted to have Longines, who has a solid heritage as timekeeper for international sporting events, sponsor the Singapore Gold Cup for the second year. We look forward to further strengthening this strategic partnership in the years to come.

The Club believes in making a difference to the lives of those in need and remains steadfast in our commitment to giving back to society."

“As the Official Partner and Timekeeper of the Singapore Turf Club, Longines is proud to present the Longines Singapore Gold Cup for the second year. We are positive about the good synergy formed from this partnership and look forward to continuity” Mr Walter von Känel, President of Longines International.

All races run on the day are named to further promote the message of charity, with the exception of the Longines Singapore Gold Cup and are listed in Annex A. The list of beneficiary organisations is at Annex B.

The 1.35 million Longines Singapore Gold Cup - the crown jewel of the Singapore Group 1 races and the final leg of the prestigious Singapore Triple Crown Series has attracted some of Singapore’s best stayers. Heading the list is Always Certain, the brilliant winner of the Raffles Cup, which is the second Leg of the Triple Crown Series.

He will be attempting the 2,200 metre journey for the first time and is the only horse in the field who is eligible for the $50,000 bonus for winning two Legs of the Series. Past Singapore Gold Cup alumni Risky Business and El Dorado have already won over the distance and there is no reason why they cannot do it again. Should El Dorado win, he will become the first horse to win three Singapore Gold Cups since the great Three Rings in 1954, 1956 and 1957.

Among the other leading contenders are Mandai Classic Stakes winner Lizarre, Emirates Singapore Derby winner Clint and Committee’s Prize winner Flying Fulton, but watch out for those horses carrying light handicaps, as history shows many of them have won over the years. That's the beauty of a handicap race: Every horse is on a level playing field.

The first race this Sunday will commence at 12.50pm with the Longines Singapore Gold Cup race at 5.55pm. The race will be telecast “live” on Channel News Asia as well as on SuperSports Arena Channel 201 from 5.30pm to 6.10pm. It will also be telecast via Horse-Racing Channel 288 on StarHub Sports for the entire race meeting.

Racegoers can purchase a special package to the Singapore Racecourse at $65. They will be entitled to an admission ticket to the Marquee, buffet lunch, a racebook and exclusive premiums. For a simple top-up of $35, package holders can enjoy free flow of wine and beer. They can also participate in the best dressed contest where the contestant with the highest vote will win a Longines DolceVita watch. There will also be a special appearance by 938 Live DJs Michelle Martin and Daniel Martin.

Racing fans at both the Singapore Racecourse and at off-course betting centres can also stand a chance to win The Longines Column-Wheel Chronograph and cash worth up to $6,500 in the “Golden Chance Draw”. The first 1,500 racegoers at the Singapore Racecourse Upper Grandstand can redeem an exclusive Longines Singapore Gold Cup cap.
