India... It's Tiger Time

Press Releases   •   Apr 16, 2008 15:02 SGT

To enhance its brand offerings in India, Asia Pacific Breweries Aurangabad Limited (APBAL), a subsidiary of Asia Pacific Breweries Limited (APB), today unveiled the launch of its locally-brewed Tiger beer (Tiger) in Mumbai.

Joining the ranks of Singapore, Malaysia, China and Thailand amongst others, India is the 10th country in the Asia Pacific region to brew the award-winning Tiger.

Launched in 1932, Tiger is APB's flagship brand which is enjoyed by millions of beer drinkers in more than 60 countries.Tiger is not new to the Indian beer market. All the while, the brand has been imported into India but was only made available at exclusive premium outlets. With the introduction of locally-produced Tiger by APBAL located in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, the brewery is set to quench the thirst for a quality premium lager by extending the availability of the brand.Tiger will be made more widely available at the various on and off trade outlets including wine shops, pubs and restaurants amongst others, enabling the local consumers to experience the distinctive taste of the 5% alcohol European-styled lager.

On this milestone, Mr Vivek Chhabra, Regional Director, South Asia & Director, Group Business Development, APB, said, "A firm believer in brand portfolio management, APBAL seeks to enhance its brand offerings to cater to the various segments of the beer market as well as to offer its consumers greater choice. Tiger is recognised as one of Asia's finest beers and will make an ideal addition to our growing brand portfolio in India. In view of India's growing beer market, rising disposable incomes of the consumers and favourable demographics, it is timely that we now offer Tiger as a premium option to the many discerning Indian drinkers who are becoming increasingly experimental in making an informed choice. Together with our other beer brands such as Baron's Strong Brew and Cannon 10000 which cater to the strong beer segment of the Indian beer market, Tiger will aptly serve those who enjoy a beer with a marginally lower alcohol content."

Promising Indian drinkers the same distinctive quality taste that Tiger is famous for, APBAL, like other APB breweries in the region brews Tiger using only the finest ingredients - malt from Australia, the choicest hops from Europe, and a unique strain of yeast cultured in Holland. Brewed under the supervision of Heineken N.V. technical experts, APBAL adheres to the most stringent quality control management and conducts no less than 200 quality checks during the brewing process.

On Tiger's brand position in India, Mr Chetan Gupta, Marketing Manager, India for APBL, Aurangabad elaborated, "We shall focus on creating a premium proposition for Tiger. Our marketing efforts will be targeted towards building the brand's appeal among discerning young adults via slick communication, recruitment programmes as well as unique and engaging experiential platforms. We are confident that Tiger's quality and distinctive taste will resonate well with the Indian consumers while the marketing campaigns will work to win fans for Tiger, who would in turn, be the advocates for the brand for the future."

Moving forward, APBAL is set to establish a significant presence for Tiger in Mumbai and gradually rollout the brand to other parts of India. Before a pan India rollout, plans are underway to take Tiger to northern India, starting with New Delhi; as well as southern India where Andhra Pradesh will be the first to introduce Tiger there. The move is consistent with the brewer's effort to tap the growing Indian beer market which registered an estimated 10.8 million hectolitres in March 2007. The total Indian beer market is expected to reach 300 million cases (about 23.3 million hectolitres) by 2012.

Launched in 1932, Tiger beer (Tiger) is APB’s flagship brand. Over the years, Tigerhas seen beer drinkers globally acclaim Tiger as one of the finest in the world. It has consistently come out on top in world tastings, winning gold medals for its crisp, smooth, refreshing, well-balanced and flavourful taste.

APB Opens Brewery in Mongolia to Brew Tiger

Press Releases   •   Jun 19, 2007 15:03 SGT

Venturing into East Central Asia, Tiger has etched its footprint in Mongolia by becoming the first foreign beer brand to be brewed there. Brewed-In-Mongolia Tiger is now tapped from the newly-commissioned brewery of MCS-Asia Pacific Brewery LLC (MCS-APB), a 55-45 joint venture between Singapore’s Asia Pacific Breweries Ltd (APB) and MCS Holdings LLC (MCS) from Mongolia.

Located in Mongolia's capital city, Ulaanbaatar, the US$20 million (approximately S$30 million) brewery sits on a site of five hectares. The plant is currently equipped with an annual production capacity of 120,000 hectolitres or more than 60,000 bottles (330ml) of Tiger each day.

Pleased with the milestone, Mr Koh Poh Tiong, Chief Executive Officer, APB said, "APB is optimistic about the potential of the Mongolian beer market and anticipates its investment there to succeed as Mongolia is one of the most liberal and foreign investor friendly economies in Asia. Coupled with its improving economy which grew 7.5% in 2006 and the increasing preference for beers amongst younger adult drinkers as well as a shift in consumer preference for beer over vodka, the Mongolian beer market looks set to grow further. Last year, Mongolia’s beer market stood at nearly 230,000 hectolitres while per capita consumption, at only about 9 litres per annum, signalled room for further growth. All these underlying conditions augur well for APB’s timely introduction of locally-brewed Tiger in Mongolia and we are glad to be in the forefront of tapping the opportunities of the young beer market there."

"We are extremely proud that Tiger has been given the honour to become the first foreign beer brand to be brewed in the world's second-largest landlocked country and one of the world's youngest democracies rich in historical, cultural and natural heritage. We are proud to have Mongolia as the 8th country to brew Tiger which is now available in more than 60 countries around the world. As we mark the 75th anniversary of Tiger in October this year, we shall be working together with our partners such as MCS to further open new markets for our flagship brand. It has always been our ambition to grow Tiger into a pan-Asian beer brand that is widely brewed and enjoyed throughout the world," added Mr Koh.

Mongolia now joins the ranks of Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and China which are currently brewing Tiger.

While Mongolian-brewed Tiger is only being introduced now, the brand is not new to beer drinkers there. APB had first exported it to Mongolia and positioned it as a premium import brand about 15 years ago. In 2005, the brewery group partnered the MCS Group and established MCS-Asia Pacific Brewery LLC in Mongolia. Since then, efforts have been intensified to build a greater awareness for Tiger in order to build up demand for the brand by the time the brewery is completed.

Mr Koh elaborated, "I am very pleased to say that our combined efforts have made tremendous headway. Tiger's volume has grown 500% in the first year of MCS-APB's inception and today, the brand has established a substantial presence in over 700 bars, pubs, restaurants and retail outlets amongst others in Ulaanbaatar. As we continue to extend the distribution of Tiger in Ulaanbaatar and beyond, the new Tiger brewery allows us to increase the availability of Tiger in Mongolia where the premium and super-premium beer categories are fast growing and present tremendous long-term potential. We believe that by brewing Tiger locally, we have the opportunity to operate within the community which places the brand even closer to the hearts of our Mongolian consumers."

Moving forward, MCS-APB is set to achieve marketing leadership and extend Tiger's distribution points throughout Mongolia. A firm believer in brand portfolio management, the brewer will gradually enhance its brand offerings to cater to the various segments of the beer market to offer its consumers greater options to drive collective volume, a brand strategy that is successfully and widely-adopted by the APB group of breweries.

Including Mongolia, APB now owns interests in 32 brewery operations in eleven countries in the Asia Pacific region. APB’s brewery count will add up to 35 in twelve countries as new breweries come on stream in China, India and Laos by 2008.

Launched in 1932, Tiger beer (Tiger) is APB’s flagship brand. Over the years, Tiger has seen beer drinkers globally acclaim Tiger as one of the finest in the world. It has consistently come out on top in world tastings, winning gold medals for its crisp, smooth, refreshing, well-balanced and flavourful taste.

Mongolia now joins the ranks of Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and China which are currently brewing Tiger.

About Tiger Beer

APB's exclusive flagship brand and Singapore's first locally brewed beer

Launched in 1932, Tiger beer (Tiger) is APB’s flagship brand. Over the years, Tiger has seen beer drinkers globally acclaim Tiger as one of the finest in the world. It has consistently come out on top in world tastings, winning gold medals for its crisp, smooth, refreshing, well-balanced and flavourful taste.

Tiger's distinctive taste comes from its quality ingredients and meticulous brewing process that involves over 200 quality checks. This European-style lager is brewed using only the finest natural ingredients like malted barley from Australia and Europe and bitter hops from Germany. The former adds body and flavour to the beer which many beer fans love; while the latter gives the brew its characteristic bitter zest.

What makes Tiger truly stand out is the special strain of yeast used in this bottom-fermented beer. This unique strain of yeast is specially cultured in Holland and it works slowly in the golden liquid at low temperatures instead of fizzling away on the surface of the 5% alcoholic brew.

From brewing to the way it is served, Tiger is crafted to satisfy the thirst for the most refreshing and flavourful beer.

An award-winning beer, Tiger has also accumulated over 40 accolades, awards and distinctions. Some of the more notable awards include a Gold medal at the Brewing Industry International Awards in 1998, the equivalent of “the Oscar Awards for the brewing industry”; and a Gold medal in the highly contested European-Style Pilsner category at the World Beer Cup 2004, which has been dubbed “the Olympics of Beer Competitions” by the beer industry. It also clinched a Gold Medal for the Australasian, Latin American or Tropical-Style Light Lager category at the New Zealand International Beer Awards 2008.

Each year from 2004 to 2006, Tiger was named a UK Cool Brand Leader. The recognition reaffirmed Tiger’s popularity and was given only to the coolest brands in the UK.
