New talent in Young Designers at Formex

Lisa Bengtsson, Malin Lundmark, Form for you, Sofia Hagelin, Sebastian Kjersén, Kristoffer Fagerström, Simon Key Bertman and Johan Lindsten are some of today’s established designers who started their careers at Young Designers – Formex’s platform for young, unknown designers.

VARG Design Collective is one of the exhibitors participating in Young Designers for the first time. The design collective was established in Gothenburg in 2013 and currently has four members: Ottie Ellström, Märta Sigurdsson, Frida Söderström Brand and Olof Norrman. One thing they all have in common is that they graduated from the Swedish School of Textiles in Borås in the spring. The vision of the collective is to serve as a creative platform for small and big ideas. By combining function with colors and patterns, they want to jointly create craftwork with uninhibited design for free-thinkers.

“The reason we are joining the Young Designers exhibition is partly because we believe that Formex is one of the premier forums for new design in Sweden, but mainly because it is fun to be able to meet and be inspired by other young designers. Our producer, Horredsmattan, who usually is an exhibitor at the fair, told us about Formex and Young Designers. We are hoping that there are more people out there than just us who are curious about young, Swedish design,” says Ottie Ellström, VARG Design Collective.

Products that have not yet been produced by an established company are submitted as application for Young Designers. The same designer is allowed to have three exhibitions in the area, but each must be for a new product. Adjacent to Young Designers is the Next Step exhibition, which is for exhibitors who have come a little further along in establishing their name within the industry. Young Designers is being organized for the thirteenth time and Next Step for the ninth time.
