Police assist firefighters at major Brighton fire

Sussex Police supported East Sussex Fire and Rescue and other local services at a major fire in Brighton.

At 8.40pm on Friday (20 September) officers were called to a large scale fire at a block of flats in Pankhurst Ave, Brighton. They cordoned off roads to help enable firefighters to deal with the incident and helped evacuate the residents to a local community centre.

Thankfully everyone is accounted for and is safe, and there were no reported casualties.

Brighton and Hove Council and local community volunteers are working to give the residents further assistance and support.We are liaising with East Sussex Fire And Rescue who are investigating the cause of the fire which is currently unexplained.

Road closures remain on place while the scene is examined and made safe.
