SkyWall is the winner of Swedavia Airport Innovation Challenge

Swedavia is happy to announce SkyWall by French Red-architectes as the winner of the International Swedavia Airport Innovation Challenge 2014.

During autumn 2013 and spring 2014 participants from all over the world could submit their challenge entries. The purpose was to find smart solutions to reduce ground noise in the residential area of Bromma Kyrka which is situated close to Bromma Stockholm Airport.

The area is exposed to sources of ground noise such as aircrafts starting their engines and taxiing as well as from the service vehicles that operate at the airport. In order to minimize the ground noise Swedavia decided to tap into global knowledge and expertise.

The jury of the challenge included representatives from Swedavia, representatives from the residential area of Bromma Kyrka, experts in the fields of acoustics, architecture and constructions.

SkyWall by Albin Rousseau, Gabriel de Boisriou and Albert Hassan at Red-architectes was chosen as the winner of the challenge. The jury was especially impressed by the creativity of the solution and the innovative design.  

The solution is based on a technique with a proven function to reduce noise levels and the reported results for noise reduction are realistic. The transparent material prevents the screen to form a barrier between the airport and the residential area of Bromma Kyrka and instead it preserves the view from the residences towards the airport, which is important for the neighbours.

– SkyWall is given a modern, innovative and timeless design. The solution is well integrated in the airport landscape and can be appreciated both from ground and air. The design highlights Bromma Stockholm Airport in a positive manner, and at the same time it solves the task to reduce the noise levels. Thus the jury consider SkyWall to contribute positively to both the neighbour’s, traveller’s and employee’s experience of the airport, says Linnéa Franzén, Environmental Advisor, Bromma Stockholm Airport.

– Now a project has started to adapt SkyWall to the local conditions. During the autumn we will invite our neighbours in Bromma Kyrka to stay informed about the procedure of the project. We are looking forward to implement SkyWall at the airport, says Linnéa Franzén. 

The challenge had close to 1000 participants from 87 different countries and almost 100 original solutions were submitted. The innovation team will be rewarded 100 000 SEK and the opportunity to have their solution realized at Bromma Stockholm Airport.
