Eklund Foundation announces the successful candidates of 2016
The Eklund Foundation is pleased to announce the four successful candidates to receive funds this year. Among applications from nations all over the world, four well-deserved odontological research projects have been selected to receive a total of 160 000 EUR.
The Eklund Foundation was established in 2015 to support research and education within the odontological field.
– We are happy to be able to contribute to the important odontological research of today, says Joel Eklund, CEO TePe Munhygienprodukter AB and Chairman of Eklund Foundation.
The foundation has decided to award grants to the following projects:
Oral conditions in patients with Reumatoid Artheritis: a population based case-control study
Main applicant: Stefan Renvert, Högskolan Kristianstad, Sweden.
Assigned sum: 708 426 SEK (73 913 EUR).
“Today there are scientific studies both supporting and not supporting a connection between periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis, and this study may contribute to shed light on the possible connection between these both diseases.”
The oral cavity as a source of febrile neutropenia: An observational study in patients with solid tumors treated with myelosuppressive chemotherapy
Main applicant: Alexa Laheij, ACTA Netherlands.
Assigned sum: 32 000 EUR.
“Patients with solid tumors are often treated with chemotherapy which may lead to febrile neutropenia. This study will evaluate if oral and dental foci have an impact on this side effect, and if so, this study has the possibility to change the future perspective on treatment plans.”
Metagenomic profiling of the microbiome associated with peri-implant diseases through high-resolution shotgun sequencing
Main applicant: Paolo Ghensi, University of Trento, Italy.
Assigned sum: 40 000 EUR.
“Peri-implant diseases, in terms of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis, occur in considerable prevalence in patients treated with dental implants. These conditions are microbial biofilm induced. This project will study the plaque microbiome, which is important for the understanding of these diseases.”
Primary prevention of complications in implant treatments: Protocol for maintenance of dental implants.
Main applicant: Eriberto Bressan, University of Padova, Italy.
Assigned sum: 15 000 EUR.
“Even though the importance of implant maintenance is well known, complications affecting dental implants occur. This project will look deeper into parts of the protocol for maintenance of implants, possibly contributing to a more successful maintenance programme.”
