TSUNEISHI HEAVY INDUSTRIES completes 201 ships

Cebu, Philippines, 8 of July -TSUNEISHI HEAVY INDUSTRIES (CEBU), INC. (THICI) named and delivered its 201st ship “BELGRANO”, an 81,600 deadweight metric ton type KAMSARMAX bulk carrier on June 30, 2015.

■ THICI ship’s evolution
With the infusion of latest Japanese technology and availability of a highly trainable pool of skilled workers, professionals and engineers in the region, the first 23,000 DWT Bulk Carrier “Sea Amelita”, was formally launched on January 28, 1997 by the former First Lady of the Philippines Ms. Amelita Ramos.

In 1994, Tsuneishi Shipbuilding-Japan introduced the TESS45, a 45,000 deadweight metric ton type bulk carrier. Tsuneishi Economical Standard Ship also known as TESS is originated by Tsuneishi Shipbuilding-Japan 30 years ago. TESS is well known and reputable brand in the world shipping market as the Tsuneishi brand. In 1999, THICI delivered its first TESS45 MV Mina Oldendorff. The series was then expanded to the “TESS52,” a 52,000-dwt carrier, with THICI’s first delivery in 2001, MV Century Sea.
In 2003, the TESS58 was developed by increasing the draft of the TESS52, the load capacity was increased to 58,100 tons without increasing the overall length or width, thus achieving a considerable improvement in economic efficiency. The size of the ship body allows easy entry into major ports around the world. MV Medi Lisbon was delivered in 2006 as THICI’s first TESS58 model.
Generally, the diversification of bulk carriers caters to the demand of ship owner’s requirements and abides to international rules.

■ The Birth of KAMSARMAX bulk carrier
A quick response to new international rules and improvements in performance quality, such as fuel efficiency, has led to the birth of KAMSARMAX bulk carriers. The KAMSARMAX bulk carrier was the international maritime industry’s first ship type to increase the deadweight of Panamax bulk carriers (vessels whose structural dimensions make them capable of traversing the Panama Canal) from the 70,000-mt class to more than 80,000-mt, and is simultaneously responsible for increasing transportation efficiency of vessels. With a higher fuel efficiency due to having enhanced features that reduce wave resistance, this model has been received well by many customers both in Japan and overseas.

Ever since the first design model was fully accomplished in 2002, we have kept ourselves abreast of international rules, developing products that not only comply with current regulations, but also match and satisfy the user’s needs. The first KAMSARMAX bulk carrier was completed in February of 2005 in Tsuneishi Shipbuilding-Japan.

However, various changes in the design of KAMSARMAX took place in 2006 for the 2nd model. In joint studies with the research institutes of Hiroshima University and the Monohakobi Technology Institute, data was gathered from tests using large towing tanks. The 2nd model was equipped with “MT-FAST”, which allows water to flow smoothly and increases propulsion efficiency. Its hull was design as “SEAWORTHY” to reduce wave resistance, adopted as standard.

In 2010, the model was further enhanced with a high-efficiency, low-vibration propeller developed with TOP-GR technology which, together with the refined hull shape, boosts propeller propulsion capability, as well as having an engine that complies with the NOx emission reduction regulation. A 1/10 scale model ship was built to recreate real sea conditions in order to find optimal solutions in improving the vessel’s energy-saving capabilities and propulsion performance. The 2012 KAMSARMAX is a ship that made standard the electronically-controlled engine in all subsequent products of TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING, including cost-effective fuel consumption functionality.

THICI’s first order for KAMSARMAX was made possible with the construction of SC-194 MV AM Express. It was delivered in 2010 where the latest enhancement of its design was completed.

■ T-CORE180, the first largest bulk carrier built in the Philippines
Our new cape size bulker “T-CORE”, recently developed to be a core part of the global marine transport. T is the initial for Tsuneishi, and the acronym CORE stands for “For Customer’s Operation, Revenue, and Environment & Safety”. This phrase is based on the development concept; “a core force in the customer’s businesses”. The number 180 in the name “T-CORE180” refers to its size of 180,000 DWT.

The T-CORE180 made history in the Philippines Shipbuilding Industry when THICI named and delivered its first and largest bulk carrier to be constructed in the country, the SC-185 MV Tenshu Maru, in 2010 with no less than the Philippine President itself His Excellency Benigno S. Aquino III.

2010 became an important and meaningful year for the shipbuilding industry in the Philippines as it ranks 4th largest shipbuilding country in the world.

■ Promoting GREEN Sea through TESS Aeroline ship model
The TESS58 AEROLINE is a premium class vessel featuring the higher fuel efficiency design of the TESS58, part of the TESS (Tsuneishi Economical Standard Ship) product line. AEROLINE is a new technology for reducing wind resistance, which combines the cut-corner design for the accommodation corner in previous models with a newly developed streamlined shape for the fore upper bow, for a 10% reduction in wind resistance. The fore upper bow has been rounded, giving the ship a stylish streamlined design.
Fuel efficiency is further improved not only by the low-resistance hull design but also by the incorporation of proprietary energy-savings technologies and an electronically controlled engine.
Among the features of the TESS series, is a notation of “Sea Green Score.” This represents the CO2 emission index. The higher the number in the index the lesser CO2 emission.

The design concept is “3-Innovation”; Fuel efficiency, Power Performance, and Aerodynamic Performance.

THICI pioneered the first TESS58 Aeroline in the Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Group as it delivered SC-220 MV Elenita on March 10, 2015. This year THICI will complete seven (7) TESS58 Aeroline vessels.
