A team of five Aspire InstructAbility graduates will carry the Paralympic Torch on a leg of its journey from Stoke Mandeville to the Olympic Stadium. The five Fitness Instructors, all of whom were unemployed before using the Programme to gain their qualifications, will be in Regent’s Park at 9.37am.

A 27 year old man with cerebral palsy has recently qualified as a Level 2 gym instructor despite not being able to talk. Laurence James, who is classed as severely disabled and uses a powered wheelchair and a speech aid, gained his qualification with the support of staff from GLL at the Thamesmere Leisure Centre.

Adam Hollick has a spinal cord injury which has left him with reduced sensation and muscle strength but he is proving that this is no barrier to a successful career in the fitness industry. After completing a voluntary work placement, he is now a paid fitness instructor at the YMCA gym in Romford. Adam was offered free training through the InstructAbility programme.

InstructAbility graduate, John Smith, was inspired to become a fitness instructor so he could help other people who have gone through traumatic injury to find a positive way forward.

A brand new InstructAbility course designed to train disabled people as fitness instructors started in Twickenham last week. The course, run by Aspire and YMCAfit, is being hosted at the Twickenham Rugby Football Union (RFU) stadium and the students have the exciting opportunity to train in the stadium’s own fitness gym used by England rugby players.
