A Fresh Walking Holiday in Bavaria - David Allard

I have recently returned from the Bavarian Beer Garden Holiday. I thought this might have been a lot of drinking and not much walking but, in fact, the walks were absolutely fantastic and the visits to the beer gardens were just the icing on the cake.

The hotel provided us with bus passes which made getting to the start of the walks much easier. The hotel in Bad Kolhlgrub is not far from Oberamergau where the world famous Passion Plays are held and we visited the theatre, though did not see a play, during our week. Besides the walks we also visited King Ludwig II’s castle and cave, and a monastery for a liqueur tasting and one evening we played 10 pin bowling. The hotel, although out of town, was a short and pleasant walk to the town centre. A real bonus was a swimming pool and sauna for which there was no extra charge. The generous buffet meals meant you could eat exactly what you wanted. The leaders Alf and Alison were excellent and there was always a choice of two walks between D and D+.
