EL Rompido – The Resort

The El Rompido Golf Resort hotel is modern and stylish with extremely comfortable rooms and there is a useful supermarket on site plus a hotel gift shop.  Our very spacious room had a mini bar (very useful for storing picnic lunches) plus a good sized balcony overlooking the pool. For a 5* hotel, we were surprised on arriving not to have our luggage taken to our room, and only spotted one ‘bell boy’ working on the last day.

The indoor spa includes a very small swimming pool, gym and beauty centre. I feel that maybe it does not quite deserve 5 stars by UK standards & the hotel was extremely quiet over the Christmas period with no entertainment to speak of – but of course Ramblers always make their own!  There was a distinct lack of staff in the bar area which also served food, hence staff disappeared to organise orders which could be quite frustrating for those left waiting to be served.  Only once, at a much quieter time did we see a waiter taking orders at tables. The choice & quality of food in the buffet style restaurant was excellent at both breakfast and dinner. I am however again surprised that a hotel with a 5* grading does not have an a la carte restaurant.

When returning very wet from walking in torrential rain, it was wonderful to be able to return to such comfortable surroundings. Several of us would have appreciated the hotel having a drying room; golfers get wet too!  The resort boasts two 18 hole golf courses which I believe can be termed as ‘seriously challenging’.  It’s a pleasant 40 minute walk across the golf course and wildlife marshes into El Rompido itself – an appealing small Spanish resort with several beach restaurants (again very quiet over Christmas). Many will feel transport is necessary as it would be undesirable after dark in winter months to have to find your way back from the village to the hotel across the marshes.

Response from Kathy Cook – Joint Managing Director Ramblers Worldwide Holidays

(Kathy Cook was also in El Rompido over the Christmas period!)

Firstly, I do appreciate these points being brought to my attention, because actioning issues such as these is how we endeavour to keep our standards up…

This is one of the very few negative comments we have received about this hotel. No European * grading can be compared to UK standards but it does have Spanish 5* status. Yes, the indoor pool is small but this often is the case when a predominantly warm weather resort boasts large outdoor pools as well. The extraordinary, unseasonably wet weather did give rise to the question of a drying room; a matter which we will take up with the hotel. However the bedrooms and bathrooms are large and warm, so we didn’t have a problem drying clothes.

A busy times staffing of the bar did appear lacking, so we shall also raise this with the hotel in time for next Christmas. The hotel was no where near full and Christmas was a low key event, and for many clients this is just what they wanted. For others, there was live music on at least two evenings and we shall enquire of the hotel if this could be more frequent event.

Lastly the food. The hotel doesn’t have an a la Carte restaurant, but if they did, the ‘groups’ half-board rate would not usually include meals in such a restaurant. The food offered was a mix of buffet style, and chefs cooking the ‘special’ at a food station, and I thought it excellent in quality, quantity and variety.
