Egypt – Land of the Pharaohs – 28 October-11 November 2010 (This tour is no longer available)

The Land of the Pharaohs trip was all that was promised and more.

One of the unexpected delights was a traditional felucca sail on the Nile.  We sailed up river from opposite the Winter Palace in Luxor, to Banana Island with Captain Muscles (!) and his Uncle as crew.  As we became somewhat becalmed, one of our party, David, took the helm, whilst Muscles and Uncle took turns in punting the boat against the current until the wind returned.

On the island we were hosted by a very competent and confident young man of around 12 years of age, with excellent English, who explained all about growing bananas.

The return journey was wonderful.  Having been rowed into the current of the river “Uncle” gave us all a challenge not to speak, with the fine of one Egyptian pound for the first to make a sound.  This ensured our silence and thus the enjoyment of listening to the flow of the river, the bird life etc: A very calming influence before we arrived back to the bustling city of Luxor and the walk back to the sanctuary of Hotel Suzanna dodging cars, minibuses, calashes and pedestrians alike.
