​Biggest ever Asda Foundation Bury 10K hailed a success as good causes are handed a cash boost

The streets of Bury were filled with colour as around 1,500 runners turned out for one of the North West’s most popular charity road runs.

Enthusiastic supporters helped generate a great atmosphere as they cheered and encouraged all those taking part in the Asda Foundation Bury 10K yesterday (Sunday 15 Sep).

Launched in 2016, the race raises tens of thousands of pounds for good causes.

Many of those taking part were supporting the event’s official partner charities - Jane Tomlinson Appeal, Bury Hospice, Joshua Wilson Brain Tumour Charity and WHAG, which helps homeless women and families fleeing domestic abuse.

The course, which started and finished near The Rock retail and leisure complex, took the field past Bury Parish Church, the Fusilier Museum, Bury Art Museum, along Manchester Road, Dumers Lane, Bury Road and Radcliffe Road.

First across the finish line was Cameron Reilly in 32mins and 37secs. He was followed by Oliver Donnelly who clocked 34mins 18secs with Peter Savage taking third place with a time of 34mins 21secs.

Fiona Lynch was the first woman home in 40mins 01secs. Second was Jenny Yates with a time of 42mins 37secs and Katie Percival took third place in 42mins 48secs.

Some of the biggest cheers of the day were reserved for the youngsters who tackled the 1.4K of the Arena Group Family Fun Run, many of them raising money for the North West Air Ambulance, the event’s official partner charity.

Councillor Andrea Simpson, cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: "Yet again our communities have got behind this annual event. Runners and spectators turned out in force with the 10k seeing the most entries to date.

“Many congratulations to everyone that took part. It’s always great to see that sense of achievement as people cross the finish line.

“On behalf of everyone I’d like to thank all the volunteers for giving up their valuable time so that thousands of people could have a safe and enjoyable event.

“We look forward to seeing everyone in 2020 for what we hope will be an even bigger and better event."

The Asda Foundation Bury 10k and the Arena Group Bury Family Fun Run are delivered by Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All in partnership with I Will if You Will and Bury Council.

Mandy Rivett, Asda Foundation coordinator, said: “Well done to everyone who took part in the Asda Foundation Bury 10K. Many of those who crossed the finish line have the satisfaction of not only completing the challenge but also raising valuable funds for some marvellous causes.”

Tristan Batley-Kyle, Run For All head of events, said: “There is always a wonderful spirit surround the Bury 10K and yesterday was certainly no exception. There was an excellent atmosphere and much of that was down to the friendliness and support of our wonderful volunteers. A big thank you must go to them.”
