​Celebration of Bury’s sporting champions

The outstanding achievements of volunteers, coaches, clubs, schools and athletes from across the borough have been honoured at the Bury 2018 Sports Awards.

The awards ceremony, held at the Elizabethan Suite, was a great success with more than 140 people joining their friends and family to celebrate their commitment to sport and physical activity in Bury.

The categories and winners were:

* Changing Lifestyle Recognition Award - Caroline Casey

* Community Club of the Year - Jigsaw

* Coach of the Year - Kyle Hall

* Disabled Sports Achiever of the Year – Daniel Hart

* Sports Achiever of the Year - Ibrahim Janjua

* Unsung Hero Award - Vivien Makin

* Volunteer of the Year - Jamie Clark

* School Commitment to PE and Sport Award - St Mary’s R.C Primary School Radcliffe

* I Will If You Will Sporting Female of the Year - Aimi Barton and Maggie Elliott

The winners will go forward to represent Bury at the Greater Manchester Sports Awards on the 16 November 2018 at The Point, Emirates, Old Trafford.

Councillor Andrea Simpson, cabinet member for health and wellbeing who opened the event, said: “I am so proud to be a part of this important occasion which recognises the sport and physical activity achievements of people throughout our borough. This year’s awards pay tribute to young and old alike and it’s fantastic to see everyone come together for this annual celebration.

“Bury is a place which caters for all cultures, ages, sizes and ability, and we are committed to providing a great service for all our communities in Bury.

“It is widely recognised that taking part in sport and physical activity is an excellent way to support our physical and mental wellbeing. I hope the stories of this year’s award nominees help to inspire many more people to take part or get involved in any way that they can.”

Daniel is a tri-athlete and has overcome his fear of riding a bike and water to compete in competitions. He is a well-known friendly face within his running community and likes to marshal at running events such as Manchester Marathon in his spare time.
