‘I Shout for the Fall’ – pictures of words by Mark E Smith

A new exhibition of images inspired by the words of Mark E Smith, iconic leader of The Fall, starts next week at Bury Art Museum.

More than 60 leading designers and image-makers from around the world were invited to take part in the exhibition, which forms part of Design Manchester’s DM18 Festival. The brief was simple: create one original A3-sized artwork from a single line of their favourite Mark E Smith lyric.

The work in the exhibition explores a range of visual styles, including photography, typography, sculptural form and fabric design. Featured designers include Ian Anderson (Designers Republic), Vince Frost, Malcolm Garrett RDI, Maxine Gregson, Claire Reyes, Angela Roche and SPIN.

Mark E Smith lived in Prestwich for most of his life, forming The Fall in 1976 and leading that inspirational band until his death earlier this year. This show aims to celebrate the independence, individuality and language disruption of a unique voice.

The exhibition will run from 22 September to 24 November. Bury Art Museum is open from 10am to 5pm (Tuesday to Friday) and from 10am to 4.30pm on Saturday. Admission is free.

Press release issued: 20 September 2018.

Picture: An image created for the exhibition by John Rooney, who has been working on the show with Malcolm Garrett and John Owens at Design Manchester.

It features a lyric from the Fall song “To Nkroachment: Yarbles” from their album This Nation’s Saving Grace.

The photo was taken by John in Harpurhey, next to the street where Anthony Burgess was born. “Yarbles” is a word in Nasdat, a language invented by Burgess for his dystopian novel A Clockwork Orange.

The typeface on this image is Sentient and was designed for the Stanley Kubrick Archive in London. The connection here is that Kubrick directed the movie version of A Clockwork Orange. The numbers behind the words are the latitude and longitude co-ordinates of the nearest bus stop to where Burgess was born. The text is also centred so it is more formal and classical, going against a DIY aesthetic. Finally the colours, orange and brown, are taken from the colours on 1980s Manchester buses.
