Press release -

Swimming from Bury to Gallipoli

Join local author John Mather for an illustrated talk about his fascinating swimming journey around swimming pools in Greater Manchester and Gallipoli.

The talk is on Monday 1 July (2.30-3.30pm) at Bury Local History and Archives Service, in Moss Street, Bury.

Having visited the 55 pools in and around Greater Manchester, John has turned his research into a comic style guide book which includes the history of the buildings and the swimming.

Among his achievements have been completing the Great North Swim on Lake Windermere, the one-mile Hellespont stretch separating Asia from Europe, and taking a dip in Russia’s Lake Baikal, the Black Sea and the Red Sea.

At the talk, visitors can buy a signed copy of John’s “Greater Manchester’s Public Swimming Pools: A Pictorial Guide” and view photographs and documents from Bury Archives Service.

Booking is not required, but for further information telephone 0161 253 5871 or email information@bury.gov.uk
