“We use human cell models to study the mechanisms by which the different iron forms affect the biology of the cell. We already know that these forms of iron increase tumour burden in mice with colon cancer," says Nathalie Scheers.
"At the moment, people should still follow the advice given by a doctor. As a researcher, I cannot recommend anything – that advice needs to come from the authorities. But speaking personally, if I needed an iron supplement, I would try to avoid ferric citrate,” she continues.
