Dirty Fences: Brooklyn Street Level Rockers 'Sell The Truth' - New Video & EP Release

Brooklyn’s  Dirty Fences often refer to themselves as a gang. And, that mentality is evident in every meaty riff and perfectly executed harmony on the re-release of their classic first self titled EP (with two brand new tracks), a perfect slice of wax that evokes early American rock and punk acts such as Red Kross, The MC5, and Johnny Thunders, whilst showing an obsession with early KISS and Motley Crüe through the lense of The Dictators and Ramones, but without being precious about their roots.
 

Right from the opening track of  “Keep Your Kitten Inside”, it immediately conjures up visions of late ’70s American wasted youth driving a Chevy Camaro at breakneck speed through sleepy suburban towns with the stereo cranked all the way up, cans of cheap lager flowing, zig zag's a rolling along with Christine and Beth in the backseat screaming to go louder! faster! at '1000 miles an hour!' Dirty Fences is rambunctious, melodic, fun and – especially dangerous. The band pay full tribute to all that is pure rock.  

Jack Daves (guitar vocals), Max Comaskey (bass vocals), Max Hiersteiner (drums vocals), and Max Roseglass (guitar, background vocals) are a quintessential New York band, the kind the city is known for producing; the band you want to hear “blasting out the PA at some dive bar that is beyond capacity before they even take stage”. This is fast, sweaty, stuff that explodes several weeks' – sometimes months' – of pent up aggression without anyone, hopefully, getting hurt or killed.

Since the EP's initial release in 2012, Dirty Fences have become true “kings of the road” covering every hectare of fruited plain in the USA and practically every kilometer on the European continent. They're always a featured attraction across the most prime club and festival circuits with bloggers raving about the energy they bring to their shows, noting semi-choreographed moves and fluid motions throughout the set. 

Their passion is reflected back in the crowds who come to see the near-legendary phenomenon that is Dirty Fences live on stage, in their element. The band have truly earned them the self proclaimed, but undisputed title of “NYC's Hardest Working Band”.

When Dirty Fences aren’t touring, you can find them at their house in Brooklyn, complete with a practice space in the basement and a quarter pipe in the backyard. “If we’re not practising downstairs, we’re writing a song, booking a tour or listening to records; we have a tireless work ethic”, Comaskey explains. “We don’t have careers; this is what we’re going to do for the rest of our lives, so it has to come first and everything else has to work around the band.”

Dirty Fences are quite possibly, the most professional 'DIY' band you will ever encounter. "Hard working means professional do-it-yourself, the kind of DIY that no one can tell is DIY," says Roseglass. Of course they enjoy the hedonistic, party life perks ( they are a total ladies band ) of running a full time touring rock machine, but they all mean serious business with laser guided precision. As one journalist aptly states, "They have their shit on lockdown". Roseglass tells us, "Me and Comaskey handle the business mostly, with the help of our manager Heidi, but everyone in Dirty Fences plays an important role; we focus on each others strengths and help each other fill in the gaps where personal weaknesses lie".

Talking of their aforementioned live shows, which are raucous explosions of riffs, energy and enthusiasm that makes every DIY venue feel like an arena, Comaskey explains that, “It’s a party on stage and we have the entire crowd going completely insane, then we’ll bring it down for a minute to get everyone’s attention, before we bring it back and knock everyone on the floor again.” 

A striking thing about the band is that their music is timeless. Some of their songs could have originally been recorded either by The Ronettes or The Flamin' Groovies but at the same time, in their own way, sound perfectly twenty-first century. "The quartet are filthy driving rock and roll with an air of irreverence that’s entirely addictive"  says the Line Of Best Fit. And just like the original debut EP back in 2012, Dirty Fences still makes for a truly essential important palate cleanser in 2017.
