Council honour local swimmers achievements

Press Release   •   Sep 04, 2014 16:32 BST

East Staffordshire Borough Council has announced that the swimming pool hall at Uttoxeter Leisure Centre is to be renamed the ‘Adam Peaty Pool Hall’.

The decision comes after local councillors agreed a need to honour Adam’s achievements and leave room to celebrate the future successes of Uttoxeter sports men and women.

The leisure centre, currently undergoing at £3.9 million refurbishment, is scheduled to open early in the New Year and Adam’s family hope that his achievements will inspire local children to take up the sport.

“We are very pleased that the Council has taken the step of recognising Adam’s achievements by naming the pool hall in the newly refurbished leisure centre after him. We hope that this will inspire swimmers to take part in this fantastic sport.” said Mrs Peaty.

Adam joins a list of successful sports men and women in East Staffordshire, 27 of which were awarded by the Council with a sport scholarship following their sporting achievement in 2013.

Councillor Robert Hardwick, Deputy Leader for Cultural Services, said: “The Council will always seek to recognise the achievements of East Staffordshire’s sports people.

“Adam’s achievements both in the Commonwealth Games and the European Championships are being recognised by the Council and I hope his performances will inspire a new generation of swimmers.

“It’s important when recognising all sporting achievements that we leave room to celebrate the future success of our sports men and women.”

A consultation undertaken by the Council earlier in the year found that 83% of respondents wished to keep the name Uttoxeter Leisure Centre.

Councillor Bernard Peters, Shadow Cabinet Member, said: “I’m very pleased that Uttoxeter and its residents were at the heart of this decision and that the Uttoxeter Leisure Centre Pool Hall is to be named after Adam Peaty, demonstrating recognition of his fantastic achievements, whilst leaving the door open for others in the future.”

Peter Edginton, Chairman of Uttoxeter 50+ Forum, added: “We are delighted that Adam's achievements have been recognised and welcome the news that the pool hall at Uttoxeter Leisure Centre will be named after him.”
