Council sets the record straight with financial information

Press release   •   May 07, 2014 17:30 BST

Following comments across the media that the council has incurred an extra £225,000 of expenditure since April the 1st 2014, East Staffordshire BC as an organisation can confirm the following.

After the adoption of the medium term financial strategy before political control changed at the Council, the Council needed to find c.£500,000 from 2015/16 to balance its budget up to 2018/19.

Since then the new administration, through its Corporate Plan, has committed itself to a review of the previous deletion of the council provided Pest Control Service and to set up member working groups to see if the Council is able to introduce the Living Wage for staff and consider the merits of producing a business plan for organic waste collection.

It has committed to find c. £15,000 from its existing revenue budgets to fund free swimming for under 16s during the Summer Holidays at Meadowside Leisure Centre.

In terms of capital expenditure, the Full Council in February decided to spend an extra ‘one off’ £50,000 on Neighbourhood development to help local organisations.

The new Cabinet is also “aiming” for a council tax freeze in 2015/16.
