Schools from across East Staffordshire attended a girl’s football festival at Meadowside Leisure Centre on Monday 2nd December to celebrate the UEFA Women’s Under 17’s Championships arrival in Burton upon Trent.
During the festival current England Women’s footballer Jill Scott was on hand to offer hints and tips while the girls played a number of small sided games against one another. After the matches had ended the girls were given the opportunity to quiz Jill in a question and answer session.
All of the school children then travelled to Burton Albion Football Ground to attend England’s UEFA Under 17’s Championship group A fixture against Portugal.
Pupils enjoyed pre match Fanzone activities including, target shooting, speed cage and football free style. They also had the opportunity to meet more of the senior England Women’s team, before watching England’s star’s of the future overcome Portugal 6-1 to head group A and claim their place in semi finals.
Councillor Bernard Peters, Deputy Leader for Service Commissioning, said: “Giving local children the opportunity to spend time with current professional footballers has given them an insight into what you need to do if you ever want to become a professional in any sport.
The England team have been impressed by the level of support they have had at the grounds. We are extremely proud that we have been able to be involved with this tournament. It is very important that support is given to the younger England teams so they know what to expect as they continue through the ranks”.
