Pies, which must contain either beef, veal, lamb or mutton steak (or a combination of these) sourced from a quality assurance scheme1, can be entered into one of the two categories below:
a) Independent pubs or restaurants based in England that make and serve pies on the premises.
b) Foodservice groups (including contract caterers and pub or restaurant chains) based in England that serve pies in their establishments.
c) Manufacturers/catering butchers that produce pies for sale in foodservice establishments based in England.

b) Multiple retailers/manufacturers that produce pies for sale in multiple retail outlets based in England.
Foodservice project manager for EBLEX, Hugh Judd, said: “We’re delighted to announce the return of England’s Best Steak Pie Competition. It is the perfect platform for any independent pub or restaurant, foodservice operator, catering butcher, independent butcher, multiple retailer or manufacturer to gain recognition for their pies.
“Anyone who has ever won a competition like this before will know what a difference the publicity can make to sales. A previous competition finalist told us: ‘Thanks to the publicity we received, we are now supplying our products into a new group of hotels. We have seen a 50% sales increase since taking part’.”

Entry forms and full terms and conditions are available to download here - all entries must be submitted by Friday 5 April 2013, after which samples will be judged by a panel of industry experts.
The EBLEX Quality Standard Mark Scheme for beef and lamb provides one of the highest levels of independently inspected quality assurance for beef and lamb in the United Kingdom. The standards contain combined guarantees of food safety, animal welfare, care for the environment and enhanced eating quality.
