Continued progress for HSEQ statistics
The number of working hours is increasing and the frequency of incidents decreasing
Whilst collating the incidents for 2013, we could see that the ESVAGT safety statistics are seeing a positive trend.
The amount of working hours rose constantly and is now in the region of 250,000 hours every month. The number of incidents did not go up in the same degree, so the incident frequency per working hour completed went down for the fourth year running. In 2013 the incident frequency was thus 0.34 against 0.37 in 2012, 0.4 in 2011 and 1.27 in 2010.
But the amount of LTI, RWC, MTC and FAC in 2013 – lost time incident, restricted work case, medical treatment case and first aid case, respectively, showed us that there is still a potential for improvement.
In 2013 the shipping company had 1 LTI, 3 RWC, 4 MTC and 45 FAC. Add to this 797 near miss incidents and 1,788 safety observations and 7,530 learning cards. Apart from this there were 5 environmental incidents, all 5 cases only involved internal spill on the involved vessel.
The inexperienced get hit most often
The LTI, RWC and MTC are the most serious incidents, and they are part of a TRC – total recordable cases that the industry uses to review incidents. ESVAGT’s TRC in 2013 were eight in all.
- Overall we can say that we developed well and saw a continued falling frequency, says Jesper Møhring Madsen, HSEQ Manager:
- So we are working more hours without incidents and that is satisfactory. But we have areas in which we can still improve. Especially in the first half of 2013 we had far too many incidents. After the summer we got the system tightened up, and from August and for the rest of the year there were no TRC, he says.
Statistics also demonstrate that it is most often the inexperienced, new colleagues who get injured:
- They have an increased risk for two reasons: They lack experience, and they see danger in a different way. This is what we will have to do something about. One initiative will therefore be to ensure that the inexperienced become better at protecting themselves and get better support from the experienced, says Jesper Møhring Madsen.
