Oscars 2016: 10 destinations by Expedia

Press Release   •   Feb 17, 2016 14:41 GMT

Every year, the movies nominated for the Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars, are an inspiration for all travel lovers. Often, movies transport us to faraway places, cities and landscapes where we have never been, or let us rediscover destinations that we already love. Expedia has created a list of 10 destinations that feature in the 2016 Oscar nominated films: from North America, to Europe and the Far East, in order to please any type of traveller.

The timeless appeal of America

Among the destinations focused on in this year’s Oscar nomination films, the US are climbing the rank. The Big Short, a story about Wall Street, the financial heart that shook the world economy in 2008 with the bankruptcy of the Lehman Brothers, while in Brooklyn, the beautiful Saoirse Ronan divides her time between the United States and Ireland. It is so easy to be inspired and daydream of flying through the streets of New York, a destination that does not need special occasions to be visited and which is suitable for any kind of traveller.

The destinations (im)possible

Not as easy, but not impossible, is to organise a trip to Mars, following the steps of Matt Damon in The Martian, nominated for Best Movie and Best Actor. To enter into the reality of the red planet created by Ridley Scott is not as complicated as you might think: just go to Budapest and take a trip to the Korda Studios to find out where the film was shot. Expedia then recommends a visit to the Hungarian capital, proposing an alternative excursion in one of the largest film sets in the world, to better understand what astronaut Mark Watney would have seen.

To just wander around the galaxy aboard a Millenium Falcon, between planets and life forms of all kinds, is still hard for us, but if you really want to venture into some of the places that distinguish the latest episode of the Star Wars saga - The awakening of the force, we recommend a trip to South East Asia. With a direct flight to Bangkok, you can explore forests and natural landscapes that were the backdrop to the events of this stellar saga. Star Wars fans can continue the journey to Vietnam to discover the Hang en Cave, one of the largest caves in the world, surrounded by the national park of Phong Nha-Ke Bang, where many fans affirm that scenes of the movie took place.

Nature lovers

One of the great nominees of this year’s Oscars, is definitely The Revenant. Though we still don’t know if this movie will convince the jury and be rewarded with one of the prestigious Oscar statues, but it certainly has enchanted the love of travel to wild and pristine lands. To travelers wanting to explore the landscape featured in The Revenant Expedia recommends a tour of the huge Rocky Mountains in Canada, where the film was shot. Alberta and British Columbia are the two regions to visit, departing from Carnaby and landing in the modern Vancouver.

Beautiful movies and landscapes are often the best combination to inspire people to plan a journey. If you are as passionate about movies as you are about travelling to new and beautiful lands, Expedia invites you to discover New Zealand, a land of lakes, mountains, forests and rivers, where many movies have taken place, such as the Lord Of The Rings saga.

Tarantino this year chose Colorado as the set for his movie, The Hateful Eight, but to admire these landscapes and snow-capped mountains there is no need to book an overseas flight. Expedia recommends in fact, a journey through the wonders of Iceland, a country that is recently becoming an extremely popular tourist attraction.

Among the foreign films nominated this year, we give a special mention to the Colombian movie, Embrace the Serpent, portraying the adventure of two explorers searching for the sacred plant Yakruna and a local native, last survivor of his tribe, inside the Amazon forest. While traveling alone in Amazonia intimidates even the most seasoned travelers, we recommend heading to Rio de Janeiro and go on an organized tour to Manaus and discover the natural wonders of the Amazon in complete safety.

That part of Europe where time stands still

If the story of transgender Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl has aroused curiosity and desire to immerse yourself in early 1900’s of Denmark, Fynske Landsby - or the Ancient city of Fyn- is the right destination to visit. It is a small village easy to reach from Copenhagen, where time has literally stopped in the early nineteenth century, where you can find houses, barns, gardens and original homes of that era and relive the lifestyle of the farmers who lived there.

Lovers of history will certainly find inspiration for their next trip thanks to Steven Spielberg and his latest movie, The Bridge of Spies. We recommend a tour in Berlin from the memories it holds of the Cold War, to discovering the life of the inhabitants of East Berlin. Fans could go to Poland to discover Wroclaw, a small city not too far from the German border, where ruins and unrestored buildings still stand from the days of the Cold War and can tell the story of those years. Precisely for this reason, the town was chosen by Spielberg to film many important scenes of his movie.
