Film concerning Estado Novo selected as one of best in London

Portuguese-born filmmaker José Miguel Esteves Caldeira has had his film ‘Those Glories are Gone Now’ selected for the Open City Documentary festival’s showcase in London, Great Britain. The film deals with the national trauma of Salazar’s Estado Novo from an outsider perspective, trying to understand how the authoritarian regime affected the Portuguese and their national identity.

The showcase, which only chooses the best documentary films from all film schools in London, will show Caldeira’s film on the 24th of June in Picturehouse Central next to Piccadilly Circus in London.

By using archives from mostly RTP, Caldeira has been able to revisit much of the state propaganda that was broadcast during the time of the Estado Novo, and juxtapose that footage with his personal commentary. The result is a dark documentary film that highlights the horrors committed by the Salazar regime, as well as celebrates the tenacity and solidarity of the Portuguese people.

The Open City Documentary festival is organised by University College of London, taking place over six days in venues across London. The programme offers a chance to see the best contemporary international documentaries as well as filmmaker Q&As, industry panels, workshops, networking and parties. The 2016 festival will take place 21st – 26th June.
