Help lower cholesterol with New Beta Glucan Snack from Healthspan.

Press release   •   May 07, 2013 10:55 BST

Covered in delicious dark chocolate and bursting with freeze-dried raspberries and crispy rice, the new chewy Beta Heart Bar from Healthspan, is a healthier alternative to a biscuit or slice of cake. Each Beta Heart Bar contains 1.5g of oat Beta-Glucan, a form of soluble fibre that has been scientifically proven to reduce LDL cholesterol*

One in 3 people in the UK are thought to have high LDL cholesterol which is a major factor in the development of heart disease. High cholesterol can affect people of all ages and can run in families, so some people may need to take proactive steps to lowering their cholesterol, even if they have a healthy diet.

Beta-glucans are non-digestible non-starch polysaccharides composed of glucose molecules. The
cholesterol-lowering effect of oat beta-glucan may depend on the increased viscosity in the small intestine that increases the synthesis of bile acids from cholesterol, reduces circulating (LDL) cholesterol concentrations and the reabsorption of bile acids.

Rachell Hipkiss, Director of Science & Nutrition at Healthspan explains “The type of people who would benefit most from the inclusion of oat beta-glucans in their diet are those that know they have high cholesterol or may be predisposed to high cholesterol because of their family history. Food sources are porridge (which typically provides 1g per 30g serving) and wholegrain breads that contain barley or oats- so having an oaty breakfast each morning and a Beta Heart Bar every day is an easy way to get the recommended 3g of oat beta-glucan daily.”

Each Beta Heart Bar contains almost one third of the recommended daily amount of fibre, is free
from artificial colours, flavourings and preservatives and is suitable for vegetarians and vegans. It also contains just 149 calories per bar.

Available from Healthspan, Beta Heart bars come in a pack of 7 and, cost £6.95.

*In 2010 the EFSA Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition & Allergies concluded that a cause and effect
relationship has been established between the consumption of oat beta-glucan and lowering of blood LDL-cholesterol concentrations. The following wording reflects the scientific evidence: “Oat beta-glucan has been shown to lower/reduce blood cholesterol. Blood cholesterol lowering may reduce the risk of (coronary) heart disease”. The beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 3g of oat beta-glucan from oats, oat bran, barley and barley bran. Each Healthspan bar contains 50% of the recommended daily amount.
