Hövding to represent Sweden in Europe’s most competitive business awards competition

The European Business Awards has announced that Hövding is to represent Sweden as a National Champion in the prestigious 2013/14 Awards programme. Based on success that the founder’s Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin have had in leading and driving Hövding and the impact this has had across the business, Hövding is selected to compete in the RSM International Entrepreneur of the Year category.

As National Champion, Hövding will now compete for Ruban d’Honneur status in the next round of the competition. Final category Award winners will be unveiled in April 2014.

The European Business Awards has identified some of Europe’s brightest businesses based on their ability to demonstrate the three core principles at the heart of the Awards programme. The esteemed panel of judges were looking for organisations to represent Sweden who exhibited the highest levels of innovation, business excellence and sustainability.

“We’re very proud to be part of this prestigious competition,” says Terese Alstin, one of the founders. “Since 2005 we’ve built a company with a strong and passionate identity, filled with our beliefs of a better world. The brand is almost an extension of ourselves. To be selected a National Champion in the category ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ means a lot to us.”

The European Business Awards is dedicated to raising the visibility and progress of companies who excel in delivering innovation twinned with successful commercial results whilst acting responsibly and positively affecting the social environment they operate in. Last year’s competition saw entries from organisations with a combined turnover greater of over €1 trillion Euros across the 28 EU countries plus emerging nations. Together these businesses employ over 2.7 million people across the continent.

To advance in the competition this year, all National Champions have to submit a video entry for viewing and assessment by a judging panel. In addition, the public will also be able to vote online for their favourite National Champion from each country, these companies become ‘National Public Champions’ and one will go on to be ‘European Public Champion’. Voting begins in November 2013.

Hövding – Airbag for Cyclists is a revolutionary cycle helmet designed for the modern cyclist. Not only one of the safest helmets on the market, but also a discrete chameleon that easily becomes part of your outfit using the changeable shell.

Unlike other cycle helmets, Hövding is not placed on the head, but as a collar around the neck. The collar contains an airbag, which inflates and protects the head in the event of an accident. Hövding contains sensors that pick up the abnormal movements of a cyclist in an accident. The airbag inflates in a tenth of a second and is fully inflated before head impact.

The airbag technology protects the cyclist’s head more effectively. Compared with ordinary cycle helmets, Hövding is in a class of its own, providing the best shock absorption in the world.

Hövding – Airbag for cyclists is available to buy in the company web shop, www.hovding.com, and in selected stores in Northern Europe.

Hövding - Airbag for cyclists

Hövding started out in 2005 as a master’s thesis by the two founders Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin, who, at the time, were studying Industrial Design at the University of Lund.

The project resulted in the concept of an airbag helmet, which won Innovationsbron’s Ideas Grant. This kick-started the process of developing Hövding into a real product. In 2006 Hövding won the Venture Cup, after which Hövding Sweden AB was founded.

Over the years Hövding has grown from just two people with a great idea, to a NASDAQ-listed company that handle everything from development and production to marketing and sales. Today Hövding consists of a team of around 30 people, all triggered by the word impossible, and Hövding’s airbag for cyclists is available in 16 markets across Europe.

The headquarters are located in an old chocolate factory in Malmö – the sixth greatest cycling city in the world. Final assembly of Hövding is carried out in association with the Japanese Company Nihon Plast.
