Press release -

Swedish company Hövding wins the world's largest design award

"This is a highly prestigious prize to win and we are extremely proud," says Anna Haupt, one of the two inventors. For a designer, winning the Index: Award is like winning the Nobel Prize.

The INDEX: Award is the world's largest design award. The awards are presented every other year in five categories, with a total value of EUR 500,000. This year’s five winners were selected from almost 1,000 nominees by an international jury of leading designers, innovators, entrepreneurs and academics from around the world. The other winners came from Chile, India, Korea and USA/Mexico.

The business concept of the non-profit organisation INDEX: is "Design to Improve Life", a vision towards which Hövding's founders Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin have worked for many years. Hövding is the company behind the invisible bicycle helmet – a helmet unlike any other currently on the market.

Hövding is a collar for bicyclists worn around the neck. The collar contains a folded-up airbag that you’ll only see if you happen to have an accident. The airbag is shaped like a hood, surrounding and protecting the bicyclist's head. The trigger mechanism is controlled by sensors which pick up the abnormal movements of a bicyclist in an accident.

You can pre-order the Hövding bicycle helmet on the company's website www.hovding.com.Hövding's invisible bicycle helmet will go on sale in DesignTorget stores in Sweden and Norway during autumn.

Hövding - Airbag for cyclists

Hövding started out in 2005 as a master’s thesis by the two founders Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin, who, at the time, were studying Industrial Design at the University of Lund.

The project resulted in the concept of an airbag helmet, which won Innovationsbron’s Ideas Grant. This kick-started the process of developing Hövding into a real product. In 2006 Hövding won the Venture Cup, after which Hövding Sweden AB was founded.

Over the years Hövding has grown from just two people with a great idea, to a NASDAQ-listed company that handle everything from development and production to marketing and sales. Today Hövding consists of a team of around 30 people, all triggered by the word impossible, and Hövding’s airbag for cyclists is available in 16 markets across Europe.

The headquarters are located in an old chocolate factory in Malmö – the sixth greatest cycling city in the world. Final assembly of Hövding is carried out in association with the Japanese Company Nihon Plast.
