Press Release   •   Jul 03, 2013 14:31 BST

Brussels. imagineear is delighted to add sound and colour to two principal exhibitions of europalia.india: The Body in Indian Art and Indomania, From Rembrandt to the Beatles. Included in the ticket price, full screen multimedia tours in French, English and Dutch (and for The Body, for young visitors in French and Dutch) will be available for all visitors on our 5-inch touchscreen MPtouch players.

Europalia is the major international arts festival held every two years in Brussels since 1969 to celebrate one invited country’s cultural heritage. For four months from October 2013, the 24th edition brings an entire sub-continent, India, to the heart of Europe, filling 150 venues in Brussels, other Belgian cities and neighbouring countries. europalia.india will translate all aspects of Indian art in all its geographical and historical diversity into a comprehensive artistic programme of music, fine arts, photography, cinema, theatre, dance and literature.

The Body in Indian Art, curated by Naman Ahuja of the JNU – School of Arts and Aesthetics opens October 4th.  Bringing together 250 masterpieces from 50 of India’s leading collections, the different perceptions, traditions and beliefs linked to the body in Indian life is presented in The Body as the central theme of the festival’s opening exhibition.  Alternating between sensual, untouchable, adorned and sacred, the body touches all aspects of Indian culture via statuary, miniatures, massage, the practice of medicine, dance, adornments, the extraordinary bodies of the many Hindu gods. They reveal the body as the subject of art, but also as the medium used to convey the values, preoccupations and aspirations of the times.

Indomania, From Rembrandt to the Beatles, curated by Deepak Ananth and Dirk Vermaelen, in collaboration with the MAS, Antwerpen explores the encounters between India and Europe through the eyes of Western travellers since the 16th Century. Attitudes to India alternate over this period between fascination, superiority, fear and ignorance.  Indomania examines the cultural and artistic consequences of these encounters, contemporary Western perception of India, and asks what aspects of the centuries-old depiction of this continent still play a role today. The multimedia tour includes recent work by two Belgium artists, Max Pinckers and Hans Op de Beeck, and is presented on imagineear’s MPtouch.  It will be included in the ticket price, and made available to all visitors in Dutch, French and English.
