National Express selects Bombardier for German regional rail network

National Express Group's German subsidiary, National Express Rail GmbH, has awarded Bombardier Transportation a €170m contract to supply 35 Talent 2 electric multiple-units for commuter services to be operated from December 2015 in regions comprising the cities of Cologne, Bonn and Munster, it was announced on 4 June 2013.

The aerodynamic 160km/h trains, delivered in three- and five-car configurations, will set high standards in comfort and security as well as economic and environmental sustainability. Among the services provided will be

multi-purpose areas for wheelchairs, prams and bicycles, accessible toilets, CCTV, air-conditioning and passenger information displays. Almost all materials used will be recyclable.

The units will be deployed on the RE7 Rhein-Münsterland-Express and RB48 Rhein-Wupper-Bahn lines. A consortium of National Express and German partner IntEgro Verkehr was awarded operating rights in February of this year under 15-year contracts worth an estimated €1.6 billion in total revenue over the period.

Managing Director for National Express's Rail Division, Andrew Chivers, will be a VIP guest at International Rail Infrastructure and Technology Summit (IRITS) 2013.
