The 4th International Railway Summit, a unique three-day event that brought together rail operators, infrastructure owners, national and local governments and expert suppliers of products and services, concluded in Paris on 17 February after a full timetable of discussion, one-to-one consultations, technical visits, and formal and informal networking opportunities.
The summit was held at the headquarters of the International Union of Railways (UIC), and was attended by 118 delegates representing 71 companies and organisations from 26 countries. Delegates attended a full conference programme, comprising keynote speeches, presentations and technical reviews, and participated in 124 one-to-one meetings with potential business partners.
Through the technical visits, delegates were given a guided tour of the Paris transport authority RATP’s newly modernised Boulogne-Billancourt workshop, which maintains rolling stock for Paris’ metro system. Delegates then visited Saint Lazare Station, Europe’s second busiest station, and fully refurbished by SNCF, the French National Railways.
During the two-day conference, speakers from around the world offered their expert insights and engaged in spirited debates on a wide range of rail industry topics including the progress of the Shift2Rail joint undertaking, the future of regional passenger rail, the effect of autonomous driving on urban rail, how train designs can adapt to the challenges of the new century, and the transformation of the sector by digitalisation.
The glittering Eiffel Tower formed the backdrop for a welcome speech by Jean-Pierre Loubinoux, Director General of UIC, as part of a reception dinner on the summit’s opening evening on 15 February. The following evening, 16 February, delegates enjoyed a delicious example of modern French cuisine at Restaurant Jérémie in Paris’s city centre, courtesy of Dinner Sponsor OSIsoft.
The summit was co-hosted by IRITS Events and International Railway Journal and was sponsored by 15 companies.
The 5th International Railway Summit will take place in Kuala Lumpur on 15-17 November 2017, the first time the event will be hosted in Asia. The 6th International Railway Summit will take place in Prague on 21-23 February 2018.

International Railway Summit is a meeting of senior executives representing the world’s key rail operators, rail infrastructure management companies, national and local governments, rolling stock manufacturers and a wide range of solution providers.
International Railway Summit provides a 'matchmaking' service between rail industry leaders ('buyers') and technical experts ('suppliers'), based on buyer delegates' project requirements and the proven expertise of large and small suppliers that we have carefully handpicked. Based on this matchmaking, buyer delegates attend one-to-one consultation sessions with suitable suppliers during the annual summit.
In addition to the one-to-one meetings, delegates also attend a conference programme given by key industry leaders and experts and network over lunches and dinners with their counterparts and industry colleagues from all over the world. International Railway Summit is co-hosted by International Railway Journal and IRITS Events and will take place on 15-17 February 2017 in Paris, France.
