Women and girls to benefit from £66,000 of Satellite Club funding distributed by London Sport

Hundreds of young women from across London are set to benefit from nearly £70,000 of Sport England Satellite Club funding distributed by London Sport.

The £66,000 of funding will be received by 28 physical activity and sport projects, the majority of which focus on supporting women and girls in London to be more active.

The announcement comes as Sport England released the latest iteration of their award-winning This Girl Can campaign which originally launched in 2015.

London Sport, the strategic body for physical activity and sport in London, received 91 expressions of interest in funding from groups throughout October 2019.

Following a vigorous assessment period, 28 projects were selected and are due to begin delivering to hundreds of young women and girls throughout January.

Gender remains a stubborn inequality in terms of activity levels with just 43% of girls considered active compared to 51% of boys in the latest Sport England Children and Young People data.

In addition to financial support, London Sport will also be working alongside Women in Sport to deliver training for project leads around reframing sport for, and working with, teenage girls.

Sport England Satellite Clubs provide opportunities for young people to participate in regular physical activity through enjoyable, convenient opportunities that are designed around their needs.

Statistically 89% of organisations delivering projects through London Sport this financial year are new compared to 2018/19 and 71% are unique since Satellite Clubs began in 2012.

London Sport’s Strategic Relationship Manager Lorna Leach said:

“It is always hugely exciting when London Sport are able to support volunteers, coaches and organisations on-the-ground to deliver physical activity and sport opportunities to Londoners.

“We’re grateful to Sport England for the funding which enables us to do this because we know how important physical activity and sport opportunities can be for teenage girls.

“Campaigns like This Girl Can have had a tremendous impact on the number of girls being active but they are still well-behind boys of the same age so more work needs to be done.”
