El Dorado 12 Year Old Rum: Why Not Give the Gift of Liquid Gold to Your Golden One This Christmas?

As we approach mid-October, it’s time to start thinking about what we’re going to buy our loved ones, family and friends this Christmas. There’s nothing more versatile than a brilliant boozy gift with endless options to suit all tastes. Gin and whisky have been the most popular Christmas gifts for the past few years, but 2018 is all about dark sprits, especially, rum. Earlier this year, rum sales in the UK crossed the £1 billion mark and it is fast competing to become the spirit of choice, not only this festive season, but in the years to come.

Golden, dark and spiced rum are particularly festive, with the best varieties displaying rich aromas on the nose and intense flavours on the palate. The best examples will make the perfect present this Christmas, not only for the most discerning drinker but for anyone who enjoys trying something new.

So why not choose to give a rum that has been voted best in the world? The true gold of Guyana, El Dorado rums, are a range of superb Demerara rums of unequalled quality and variety which have consistently won the highest international awards.

El Dorado 12-Year Old was judged the ‘Best Rum’ at the inaugural Caribbean Rum Awards hosted earlier this year. This special rum was also awarded Silver at the 2017 International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC), achieved the Rum Trophy and Gold Medal Outstanding at the 2015 IWSC as well as being awarded Gold Medal Outstanding in the 2014 and 2013 IWSC. It is produced strictly from local Demerara sugar cane and has been aged for at least 12 years in old bourbon oak casks. It has been hand-blended to perfection by master blenders to achieve its exceptionally smooth, rich, award-winning character.

It has a super attractive nose packed with aromas of sugar, honey, banana, toffee, raisin and sultanas. Its ripe, rich and balanced flavours attend with sweetness, after which the finish is delightful, elegant and dry. It is best enjoyed straight or on the rocks.

Its unique flavor is much due to the tropical climate of the lush country of Guyana – which translates from its Amerindian name “Land of many waters”. It is made in the Diamond Distillery, by Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL), which is set along the banks of the Demerara River and dates back to 1670. It is the last Demerara rum distillery in Guyana, the only home of Demerara sugar, which produces rums with rich, mouth-watering flavours and impressive complexity. DDL has over 300 years’ expertise of sugar and rum production and no other rum distillery in the world can boast of such heritage.

El Dorado uses some of the oldest and unique rum stills in the world. Three of the stills are made of wood, as opposed to copper or stainless steel. These are the last fully working stills of their kind and help give El Dorado rums their rich and distinctive character.

El Dorado 12-Year Old is now available at Waitrose, £39.50. www.theeldoradorum.com.
