Mayor's reception held for Brighter Whitehead QAVS success

The Mayor of Mid and East Antrim has hosted a reception for Brighter Whitehead following their success on being awarded The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS).

The reception was held in Carrickfergus parlour and was attended by local councillors and the Mayor.

The QAVS is the highest award given to volunteer groups across the UK.

Now in its 17th year, the QAVS has received more than 500 nominations from across UK, with just over 280 groups receiving the award – 22 of which are in Northern Ireland.

Mayor Maureen Morrow, said: “I am delighted to welcome the Brighter Whitehead group for a reception to mark what they have achieved with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

“This is deserved recognition of the excellent work this group does within the community and it is fitting they have received such a prestigious honour.”

As well as horticulture, Brighter Whitehead have been champions of biodiversity, sustainability and community involvement over the years.

Whitehead has competed in Ulster in Bloom every year since 1995 and has represented Northern Ireland at the RHS Britain in Bloom competition 12 times, having great success at both.
