Appeal to trace taxi driver re: rape allegation, Morden

Detectives investigating an allegation of rape in Merton are trying to trace a Hackney carriage driver who may have information that could assist them.

The victim, an 18-year-old woman, reported being raped in Morden in the early hours of Sunday, 22 November. She is believed to have travelled with the suspect in the black cab.

The man initially hailed the taxi near to McDonalds on Mitcham Road, Tooting at about 02:30hrs.

Shortly after pulling away, the taxi stopped at traffic lights at Tooting Broadway Underground Station, where the man wound down the window and offered a lift to the victim.

They were driven to a road close to Morden Underground Station where they were dropped off.

Detectives would like to speak with the driver - who is described as a black man - regarding the fare.

The woman is described as white, with medium length dark hair. She was wearing a black jacket, short skirt or dress and black boots.

The man, who originally hailed the cab, is described as white, aged in his 20s, with a bald or shaved head. He was wearing a brown jacket.

Police are keen to identify the taxi driver, who is not a suspect.

Detectives from the Sexual Offences Exploitation and Child Abuse Command are investigating.

The driver, or anyone with any information, that could assist the investigation is asked to contact Detective Constable Ashley Lees who is leading the investigation on 020 8721 4106.

+ A 28-year-old man from Merton has been arrested in connection with the investigation. He has been bailed to return on a date in February pending further enquiries.
