On the morning of Friday, 12 January, officers from Southwark working with enforcement officers from the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority executed a warrant at commercial premises on Old Kent Road.

A 41-year-old Albanian male from Peckham was arrested on suspicion of human trafficking, money laundering and the illegal importation of tobacco products. He was taken to a south London police station where he currently remains.

Twelve Romanian workers, comprising two women and 10 men, all thought to be victims of trafficking for labour exploitation, were found on the premises.

On searching the suspect's home address in Peckham, police found five more Romanian adults comprising three men and two women and a four-year-old girl.

Six of the suspected victims, including three males and three females, agreed to assist with enquiries and were taken, along with the child, to a temporary reception centre where they are being cared for and interviewed and will be assessed as potential victims of trafficking.

Enquiries are ongoing.
