A man who killed his girlfriend’s kitten and then attacked her has been jailed.
Lawrence Santos, 24 (06.08.93), of Bourne Terrace, W2, pleaded guilty to two counts of assault by beating and one count of criminal damage at Southwark Crown Court on Tuesday, 23 January.
The same day, he was handed a 14 month custodial sentence and a five year restraining order against his victim.
He pleaded guilty to another count of criminal damage at an earlier hearing.
On Sunday, 13 August 2017 at approximately 23:55hours, the victim was sleeping at her home address in Maida Vale when she was awoken by her boyfriend, Santos.
Santos told the victim he had been giving her five-month-old cat Mimi a bath and that it now was not responding.
The victim jumped out of bed and tried to revive Mimi, but she was unsuccessful.
An argument then broke out between victim and Santos when he has grabbed the victim by her shoulders and pushed her against the bed.
Santos got on top of her and started restraining her by holding her arms against the bed. He then slapped her on both the left and right side of her cheek and started to punch the victim's right leg.
During this time, Santos also punched victim in the head and attempted to strangle her.
He also smashed the victim’s mobile phone on the ground, resulting in the phone breaking.
The victim desperately tried to get up and was struggling with Santos, who was trying to stop her from leaving. She eventually managed to free herself and ran out of the flat and into the street in her dressing gown where she attempted to flag down a taxi.
Santos chased the victim and managed to catch up with her. He tried to drag her back into the property by violently pulling at her dressing gown, causing cuts and bruises to her knees.
The victim was screaming for help and attracted the attention of bystanders who rushed to her assistance and called the police. As a result of the prolonged and sustained attack, the victim has sustained bruises and cuts to her face, arms and legs.
Santos was arrested and charged on 14 August with two counts of assault by beating, two counts of criminal damage and two offences under the Animal Welfare Act.
Detectives from Westminster's Community Support unit investigated and were assisted by the RSPCA.
DC Isabella Grotto, the investigating officer from Westminster’s Community Support Unit, said: "Santos is a dangerous individual who killed a defenceless animal before viciously attacking his girlfriend.
"I’d like to praise the victim’s incredibly bravery for both escaping from Santos on the evening and for assisting police throughout the investigation so we could secure today’s conviction.
"I’d also like to praise the bystanders on the evening who rushed to the victim’s aid and called the police.
"I hope yesterday's conviction and sentencing gives the victim a measure of comfort and closure."
