Statement on Independent Police Complaints Commssion investigation into document destruction

News   •   Feb 08, 2017 16:07 GMT

In May 2016 the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) made a voluntary referral to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) regarding the allegation that documents belonging to the National Domestic Extremism and Disorder Intelligence Unit (NDEDIU) had been shredded in May 2014.

The IPCC is carrying out an independent investigation into this matter.

It was also identified that this allegation was first recorded within the MPS in December 2014. The reason why it was not progressed further at that stage is unclear and will also be subject of the investigation by the IPCC.

The MPS has briefed the Public Inquiry into Undercover Policing regarding the referral. We remain committed to providing our fullest possible co-operation to the Inquiry.

It would be inappropriate for the MPS to provide further information whilst the independent investigation is ongoing.
