News   •   Dec 31, 2015 10:59 GMT

Detectives from the Roads and Transport Policing Command are appealing for information and witnesses following a fatal collision at Staples Corner in Barnet on Tuesday, 22 December.

Formal identification has now taken place and we are able to name the deceased as Patrick Downer, 55 (22.01.60) of Bedford.

A post-mortem examination took place on Tuesday, 29 December and gave the cause of death as multiple injuries.

An inquest was opened and adjourned on Wednesday, 30 December at Barnet Coroner's Court.

Mr Downer was one of five demolition workers who had become stranded when their van broke down on the northbound M1 at Staples Corner.

Two of the men were taken away - with the van - by a recovery vehicle, and the other three left on foot to try to reach public transport. Having walked around Staples Corner roundabout, Mr Downer was struck by a van on the slip road to the M1 southbound.

The driver of the van stopped after the collision. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs and causing death by careless driving. He was bailed to a date in late March pending further enquiries.

Detectives from the Roads and Transport Policing Command will be liaising with the Health and Safety Executive.

Any witnesses or anyone with any information is asked to call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit at Alperton traffic garage on 020 8991 9555.
