The Cadbury Foundation Empowers Visually Impaired Students with Kitchen Gift

ChildVision, Irelands National Centre dedicated to the therapeutic and educational needs of Blind and Multi-Disabled Children and Young People today launched an assistive kitchen as part of their Lifelong Learning Programme. This kitchen was funded by The Cadbury Foundation as nominated by Trevor Tanner, Account Manager for Mondelez International based at the companies Coolock site. Speaking at the launch today Chief Executive of ChildVision, Brian Allen, outlined the impact the kitchen will have on the daily programme for the 18-23-year-old student group on ChildVision’s campus,

“Learning to cook simple meals has always been a priority for the majority of our older students and is an integral part of an independent living skills programme they study. The Cadbury Foundation has now provided them with access to a functional and practical kitchen space that allows these students to learn about food and nutrition, providing them with lifelong knowledge that can have a huge impact on their quality of life, self-esteem and long term health,” he said.

Eoin Kellet, Managing Director for Mondelēz International Ireland and Cadbury Foundation Trustee said: “We’re extremely proud to be able to support the local charities that are important to our employees through our ‘Your Charity Your Choice’ scheme. ChildVision provides an invaluable service and we’re delighted that with The Cadbury Foundation’s help, this kitchen has been created and is making an impact on local families.”

The kitchen has also enabled the creation of a student micro-enterprise ‘Taaffe’s Treats’. Every Thursday the students bake goods that they sell in the café on Friday morning. This enterprise entails choosing and planning what to bake, shopping for ingredients, baking and cleaning up and then interacting with both staff and members of the public whilst selling on a Friday. To date it has been a very successful enterprise with all treats selling out within thirty minutes. It provides opportunity to learn planning decision making and organisational skills, independent living skills such as cooking, cleaning and money management whilst concurrently enhancing self-esteem and confidence.
