Fochabers to host weekend of competitive badminton

A WEEKEND of competitive badminton, organised by Moray Council and Badminton Scotland, will run next month in Fochabers.

Despite badminton being played extensively across Moray, there is little competitive action, which will be the focus of this event.

Taking place at Milne’s High from Friday 16 February, there are round robins for adult and family doubles. The family competition is suitable for families with children aged 11+, who can hold a rally and serve.

Feather shuttles will be used for the adult competition, and all are welcome to register to take part, regardless of whether they are connected to a club. Badminton Moray players will also be eligible to play in this competition. It’s preferred if entrants register as a pair, however those without partners are welcome to get in touch with Badminton Scotland, who will help source partners.

For the family event there are more flexible pairing arrangements, with the organisers happy to accept teams of two juniors, one parent and one child, one grandparent and one child etc.

Andrew MacKenzie, Badminton Scotland's Regional Development Officer, said: “Badminton Scotland and Moray Council are really looking forward to the event as we want to increase badminton opportunities in the Moray area. We both feel that this is a great opportunity for clubs, community centres, village halls and school teams to come represent their area, show off their skills and enjoy the event as a whole. The Badminton Open event is for all abilities to compete, so bring a friend or family member to team up. We hope to see you there!”

Kim Paterson, Moray Council's Sports Development Officer, added: “Badminton is a strong sport in the Moray area however there are a lack of competition opportunities, particularly for adults. This weekend of badminton is an opportunity to check the appetite for more competitive action in the area and, if successful, we will look to implement a programme of competitions throughout the year. We hope these events will help develop connections between existing clubs/groups so that they can organise their own informal matches.”
