NAG’s HPC Experts Win Innovation Excellence Awards at ISC13

Press Release   •   Jul 01, 2013 09:39 BST

1 July 2013 – The Numerical Algorithms Group (NAG), numerical software developers and high performance computing (HPC) services company, were delighted to be presented with two HPC Innovation Excellence Awards at the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC13) in Leipzig (17-24 June 2013).

The awards, presented to the NAG HECToR Computational Science and Engineering Team on behalf of IDC – global market intelligence company, and the HPC User Forum Steering Committee were for two of NAG’s many successful application performance improvement projects as part of the UK’s national supercomputing service, HECToR. The two key projects recognised by the awarding bodies were:

· 'Performance of Quantum Monte-Carlo Application (CASINO) Quadrupled’  with the University College London; and

· 'Performance of Molecular Dynamics Application (DL_POLY_3) 20x Faster after Optimisations' with STFC and the University of Warwick.

NAG is delighted to have its HPC expert services recognised and acknowledged in this way. Speaking after receiving the award at ISC13, Dr Mike Dewar, Chief Technology Officer at NAG said “NAG HPC software performance experts have delivered major performance and functionality gains for many users of supercomputers over the last decade. The NAG HECToR Team in particular has helped the research users of HECToR to achieve substantial increases in the science and engineering output through over 50 successful application improvement projects. We are proud that the NAG HECToR team has been awarded the HPC Innovation Excellence Awards and will continue to serve our commercial and academic users around the world”.

The HECToR service is provided by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) - the UK’s main agency for funding research in engineering and the physical sciences. Professor David Delpy, EPSRC CEO said “EPSRC’s investments in the HECToR HPC service are significant, they have provided the tools for the UK’s scientists and engineers to discover and test new ideas across a wide range of disciplines. However, having the right kind of software and advice is key to using these tools to maximum effect and efficiency. The Numerical Algorithms Group (NAG) deserve our congratulations on this recognition of their valued support for HECToR.”

Speaking of NAG as winner of two of their HPC Innovation Awards, Chirag Dekate, Research Manager HPC/Technical Computing at IDC said "NAG has done outstanding work in the HPC services arena. The HPC UF Steering Committee judged the HECToR dCSE submissions to be compelling examples of advanced innovation with strong returns on investment, made possible by increasing the efficiencies of important applications kernels. IDC is delighted to present the NAG HECToR dCSE Team and their collaborators with their awards
