Education Secretary, Michael Gove announced that the National Curriculum review will ensure that narrative British history is put back at the heart of the school classroom agenda, while historian Professor Simon Schama will advise on the move.
Mr Gove told the Conservative conference in Birmingham: 'Children are growing up ignorant of one of the most inspiring stories I know - the history of our United Kingdom. The current approach we have to history denies children the opportunity to hear our island story. The trashing of our past has to stop.'
Professor Schama said the Government's decision to order a re-birth of history in the school's curriculum would represent a moment of cultural and educational rediscovery.
In his speech, Mr Gove also announced new powers to help head teachers keep order and maintain discipline in their schools.
