Conservative Party: Retail sales rebound in January

Retail sales rebounded strongly last month after a poor pre-Christmas period, according to ONS figures out today.

Sales volumes rose 1.9% from December to January, the biggest jump on record and three times faster than analysts' expectations.

Yesterday a CBI survey showed increasing confidence in manufacturing, seen as key to rebalancing the UK economy. Figures showed that total order books continue to strengthen, with firms predicting further acceleration in production growth over the next quarter.

Ian McCafferty, CBI chief economic adviser, called the UK manufacturing outlook "very encouraging".
