How Will The iPhone 5 Compare With The Samsung Galaxy S3?

News   •   Aug 27, 2012 11:14 BST

In this article I am going to look at how the potential features of the iPhone 5 may compete with those of the Samsung Galaxy S3.  This is because the Galaxy S3 is currently one of the main rivals to Apple's current smartphone, the iPhone 4S.

Camera

As a camera phone, the Samsung Galaxy S3 is widely regarded as one of the best available.  However, it shares many of its features in common with those of the iPhone 4S, so by improving the camera of the iPhone 5, this presents Apple with a perfect opportunity to compete with the Korean manufacturer’s current flagship Android smartphone.  There had been a number of rumours regarding the camera of the iPhone 5, one suggesting an increased resolution to 12 megapixels.  If this is the case, then naturally the resulting photos will be of significantly higher quality than those that can be captured on the iPhone 4S or the Samsung Galaxy S3.  Aside from increasing the camera’s resolution, we can also expect to see a number of new image enhancing features as well as new capture modes.  These may include the ability to simultaneously capture photos and videos, as well as panoramic shot modes etc, similar to features found in the Samsung Galaxy S3.

Processor

The Samsung Galaxy S3 was one of the first smartphones to incorporate a quad-core processor, which puts it way ahead of the iPhone 4S (on paper at least) in terms of performance.  This is another opportunity for Apple to match or even outdo its Samsung rival. By incorporating a quad-core processor, users will enjoy numerous benefits across a range of the handset's features.  There have also been suggestions that it will keep the same dual-core processor of the iPhone 4S, but increase its power to 1.5 GHz.  Whether or not this case, it will still see a welcome increase in power than the current version.

Screen

The Apple iPhone 4S has long been renowned for the quality of its touchscreen.  The retina display is largely responsible for this, relying on its industry leading pixel density to ensure that the naked eye cannot distinguish between individual pixels on the screen.  Additionally, it offers great colour rendering, consistent brightness and excellent detail.  If there is one disadvantage to the screen, then it would be its size.  The 3.5 inches is rather small compared to that of the Samsung Galaxy S3, which measures up at 4.8 inches and utilises Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen technology and has a high definition pixel resolution.  The iPhone 5 is rumoured to have a 4 inch display, and this would make sense as if Apple wants to compete then it will improve upon the current iPhone version.

Of course, we will not know what the actual specifications of the iPhone 5 will be until the handset is officially released.  However, there is now not long to wait, as this is rumoured to take place on the 12th of September, and will certainly be the smartphone event of the year.
