Labour Party: More evidence that the Tory-led Govt needs to think again on its deeply destructive cuts to the police - Cooper

Yvette Cooper MP, Labour's Shadow Home Secretary, commenting on the Home Affairs Select Committee report published today, said:

“This is yet more evidence that the Tory-led Government needs to think again on its deeply destructive cuts to the police.

“Over 10,000 police officers are already going to be lost because of the Tory-led Government’s front-loaded 20 per cent cuts to police budgets. Cutting so steeply in the first two years makes it even harder to deliver sustainable efficiency savings rather than hitting frontline services. This reckless and irresponsible policy is putting Chief Constables in an impossible position and it is likely to get even worse.

“The Home Secretary and the Prime Minister have consistently claimed they will protect the frontline. But astonishingly, as the Select Committee points out, Ministers can’t even explain what frontline means. This is a cavalier approach to public safety and a breach of trust.

“The Government is failing in its duty to properly resource and protect our police forces. It is putting the safety of communities up and down the country at risk.”
