Yvette Cooper MP, Labour's Shadow Home Secretary, responding to the Home Office’s review of gun licensing checks reported today, said:
"The Tory-led Government is in denial about the effect of their disastrous and destructive cuts to the police.
“It’s absolutely right that home checks for gun owners should continue. But the police have made clear that these gun checks were stopped because of government cuts.
“Theresa May needs to face up to the fact that 20 per cent budget cuts and the loss of over 10,000 police officers is causing immense strain.
“The Home Secretary needs to urgently think again on the pace and scale of their cuts to the police. Chief Constables across the country are being put in an impossible position and the safety of our communities is being put at risk. If gun checks are being stopped, what else is on the list to deliver the cuts?”
